cook some Texas hots

That is what I am naming them. They are absolutely the best burgers ever.

Not only are they delicious, but they are also super easy to make OH & did I mention that they are healthy too!! OH & did I mention everything we got we purchased at Target (so it really was not a budget breaker by any means).

Ingredients:

  • turkey burgers (either pre-made or just getting ground turkey would work)
  • jalapeno (we just used 1 that was about 2 inches long)
  • onion
  • cheese (we used provolone)
  • rolls
Directions:
Step 1: cook 1 side of burgers
Ben was confused as to why I was taking pictures. Not angry…. I think.
Step 2: flip over, put peppers on burger, add cheese on top of peppers
Step 3: put spinach on rolls, put burgers on spinach, top with onion
You can see the peppers through the cheese…. yummmmm.
It was delicious. So easy, so spicy, so juicy, & crunchy with onion & the peppers all on some overly healthy spinach. It might have been so good we ate 1 for lunch & decided to make them again for dinner.

Burgers & chips. That is what summer is made of – even if it was healthy!!
**Fear not, ice cream was also eaten – had to balance out the healthiness**

eat a cupcake

Recently I have seen a bunch of posts about food, especially cupcakes. They all look delicious & wonderful & I want to eat each & every one of them. The only problem is, no one has commented on something that I thing is absolutely crucial: HOW to eat a cupcake.

In case you are wondering, this is the best way to eat a cupcake. There are so many things that are great about eating a cupcake like this, but the number 1 pro is that you will NEVER EVER NEVER pinkie swear get colored frosting all over your teeth & usually your hands stay pretty clean too. This is a tried & true method. I will give you your money back if you are not 100% satisfied. Also, this solves the cake to frosting ratio problem most people experience after bites 1 & 2.

So here you go, the best way to eat a cupcake:

1. Buy cupcake (mine was from HEB, a local grocery store)

2. Confirm cupcake has sprinkles on it…. check.

3. Separate the top from the bottom of the cupcake by tearing the bottom portion of the cupcake off. It sounds cruel, but just go with it for the moment.

4. Place the bottom of the cupcake onto the top of the frosting.

Also: look at the difference turning the kitchen light on vs. using the flash – haha I rock at photography

5. TAKE A BITE.  (caps totally necessary) So what if I take big bites of cupcakes. Do not judge me, join me.

6. Watch out for others who also enjoy eating cupcakes. “Helpers” are everywhere.

paint

It has been hot here in Texas. I know that is sort of a no-brainer, but I mean really hot. Hotter than I am use to hot. 106 every single day sort of hot.

Even the squirrels think it is hot: (please forgive the horrible quality of this photo)

The one of the right is a female. She was just a bit startled when she realized I was watching. The one of the right is a male. He pulled a major “honey badger” & did not care one bit about ANYTHING. {just FYI honey badger video is PG13 – at least, but is super hysterical}

The heat has made me cranky & a bit stir crazy. I want to go ride my brand new bike every thing day/night, but it is just so hard to find the time between work & not wanting to die of heat exhaustion.

To cure my stir craziness I worked on a very quick project I have been meaning to do. Once again I resorted to my stash of oops paint. Oh how I love thee oops paint. We got 2 of these wooden containers from Target while we still lived in Knoxville. They are the perfect size to hold video games & controllers. The funny part is that is not at all what they were intended to do. We found these guys in the bathroom section of Target for like $8-$10/each (a bit pricey for me, but Ben said just do it).

Now they live on the shelf under our coffee table keeping controllers & their cords from straying too far & where they are easily reached from the couch (because who wants to have to get up to get a controller when they want to play Little Big Planet). They are awesome little guys – except that they are a strange color. It matches absolutely nothing we own.

I did like that they were light though. We have a tendency to lean toward the Ikea black/brown color far too often when it comes to furniture. The plus side of that is we can make all our little accessories colored & still keep somewhat of a cohesive theme.

But like I said,  the oops paint saved the day.

This is the still wet color of the paint. I will add a picture of it dry, but I really do not think it will dry much different than this color. In the next picture you can see my little container of oops paint.

A whole $.50 redo. Now they pull out the light blue color that is in the fabric of the pillows I made (fabric from Ikea) rather than just hanging out all unmatchy.

Oh & thanks to this little project I did not go crazy this weekend. Oops paint, you are my hero.

dye

I really am not a huge fan of white pants regardless of whether it is before, after or during Memorial Day. Khaki I do not mind, but I much prefer jeans or colored pants. Somewhere along the way I had acquired a pair of white capris & a pair of white board shorts. I had wore the shorts MAYBE once or twice & worn the capris only a few more times. I really liked the way they fit but white is just such a pain to wear. Under garments are an issue & so is worrying about spilling stuff on yourself, what you may sit on, & pretty much just walking around on egg shells that the world will soil your whiteness.

I just could not bring myself to donate clothing that fit me so well just because I was unhappy with the color. I had read a few posts about people using Rit dye so I thought maybe I would give that a try. I knew the worst that could happen is the dye would ruin the clothing & I would still be able to donate it or use it for material or something.

Since Ben was mid-video game I ran out to Hobby Lobby to see what colors they had in stock. I considered green, navy & some brighter colors, but I decided black would be the safest bet. That way it would be an all or nothing sort of dealie. That & if the color did not “stick” I figured I would most likely be able to live with any shade of gray that resulted.

For the most part, I followed the directions – sort of. I did a combination of the stovetop & bucket methods. I warmed up a bunch of water on the stove & dumped it in a bucket so it was nice & hot. I soaked a shirt for about 8 minutes. I soaked the shorts for more like 12. & the capris I let soak for right around 2o minutes.

the set up - bucket, cardboard box lined with garbage bag & plastic bag turned "glove"

the directions - when paper is not enough, there is always the internet

the mess of darkness

The directions say to wear gloves, but since I did not have any of those, I just put my hand/arm into a plastic bag & used that to stir everything around.

my hands survived fairly well

my fingernails were not as lucky

Here is how they turned out:

After washing in warm water & drying, here is how they looked. It is sort of difficult to see by this picture (taken at night & with terrible low lighting & on our blue/gray couch), but the color is sort of blackish, grayish, with maybe a hint of violetiness. I will have to get a picture of them on so you can actually see what the color looks like in daylight.

The neat thing about dye is that it does not always adhere to the thread used in a garment. As you can see in the capris (on the left) that means that you can see the white thread even though the cotton fabric is no longer white. It does make for a neat effect. (Yeah I meant to do that, sure did, this was not just a cool mistake, no way….)

Side note: if you have the ability to do this outside it is very much recommended. I was absolutely TERRIFIED every single second. Maybe it was just because it was black dye. Probably not though. It just is so super permanent & we have so maybe surfaces I did not want a drop to fall on.

Overall I would say dye = awesome. I will most certainly be trying it again. I might let whatever I dye sit a bit longer so maybe it will absorb a little more of the coloring.

P.S.- dye is soooooo much easier than sewing. If you have something that needs a little refresher I absolutely recommend you try to dye it!!
